Evaluating the Evidence for Paranormal Phenomena

چکیده
Parapsychology: A Handbook for the 21st Century is a successor to an earlier Handbook of Parapsychology published 38 years ago (Wolman, 1977). The authors of the present Handbook discuss the relevant empirical, methodological, and conceptual developments that have taken place in the field of parapsychology since then. It is a high-level book written primarily for academic scholars and graduate students and is sufficiently detailed to permit readers with or without previous knowledge of parapsychology to evaluate the conclusions drawn by the authors.

The effect of pseudo-psychic demonstrations as dependent on belief in paranormal phenomena and suggestibility
This paper describes two experiments which investigate the effects of pseudo-psychic demonstrations (i.e. conjuring tricks which could be misinterpreted as genuine paranormal phenomena). In the first study, a demonstration of a supposed medium was presented to 91 subjects individually, in which the playing card selected by a subject was identified ‘‘telepathically’’. It was found that hypnotic ...
متن کاملDoes Psi Exist and Can We Prove It? Belief and Disbelief in Psychokinesis Research
Psychokinesis research is encountering difficulties in replicating its findings. Centuries before psychokinesis phenomena such as levitation or moving objects were well known. Today anomalous phenomena seem to be reduced to rare and weak effects in stochastic processes. While experimental and analysis methods became more and more professional in the last decades, researchers complain about a lo...
متن کاملThe Roles of Religion, Spirituality, and Genetics in Paranormal Beliefs
Recent articles by Erich Goode (2000) and Glenn Sparks (2001) discussed the relationship between religious and paranormal beliefs. Goode proposes that they share a common foundation of belief in phenomena that are outside conventional science. Sparks is less certain of a relationship between traditional religion and paranormal beliefs. However, both writers agree that there are multiple dimensi...
متن کاملIndividuals Who Believe in the Paranormal Expose Themselves to Biased Information and Develop More Causal Illusions than Nonbelievers in the Laboratory
In the reasoning literature, paranormal beliefs have been proposed to be linked to two related phenomena: a biased perception of causality and a biased information-sampling strategy (believers tend to test fewer hypotheses and prefer confirmatory information). In parallel, recent contingency learning studies showed that, when two unrelated events coincide frequently, individuals interpret this ...
متن کاملScience and Paranormal Phenomena * †
In order to ground my approach to the study of paranormal phenomena, I first explain my operational approach to physics, and to the “historical” sciences of cosmic, biological, human, social and political evolution. I then indicate why I believe that “paranormal phenomena” might — but need not — fit into this framework. I endorse the need for a new theoretical framework for the investigation of...
